If you’ve never visited a specialist orthodontist before, you may not know how easy it is! There’s a common belief that you have to be referred to an orthodontist by another dental professional. We’re here to tell you that this just isn’t true!
What do you need to do to get an appointment with a specialist orthodontist?
Anyone can self-refer to a specialist orthodontist. All you need to do to talk to us about your teeth alignment is get in touch and make an appointment. You can even do this online: it really couldn’t be simpler!
This is great news if you’re considering realignment treatment and want to get some advice on how to move forwards. Our specialist orthodontists will be able to assess your current alignment and make recommendations based on your individual requirements.
Do you ever need to be referred by your usual dentist?
The only time you will need to be referred to a specialist orthodontist by your usual dentist is if you are hoping to receive treatment on the NHS.
NHS orthodontic treatment is available to people under the age of eighteen who have what is considered a clear clinical need for treatment. Once NHS patients have been referred by their dentist, their orthodontist will assess whether their teeth alignment merits treatment per the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). We’ve explained more about this process here.
What are the best first steps?
If you’re unhappy with your current teeth alignment and are considering realignment treatment, the best thing to do is to get in touch with a specialist orthodontist directly. You may also wish to consider getting in touch if you’re experiencing issues with your jaw or with snoring.
