Lingual Braces: How Are They Fitted?

Lingual Braces, including the Incognito braces system used at all four of our Specialist Orthodontic Group practices, are extremely popular.

Want to know why? Easy:

  • They offer all the benefits of a traditional fixed brace
  • They’re virtually invisible
  • They’re said to be the most comfortable braces to wear
  • Treatment time is typically around 30% quicker than other fixed braces

Lingual braces differ from other types of fixed brace as they are fixed onto the lingual side of your teeth. This means the side that faces the inside of your mouth. Though this is just as effective as placing the brackets on the outward facing side of your teeth, there is one major benefit: other people won’t be able to see them!

When you choose lingual braces, your orthodontist will provide you with a completely bespoke brace. During an initial appointment mould will be taken of your teeth which will be sent to the laboratory. The lab will then be able to use those moulds to build a bespoke set of brackets and archwires that are designed to slip discretely onto your teeth.

Back at the orthodontic clinic, your orthodontist will then be able to fit your incognito brace in just the same way as they would with a standard fitted brace. First they will cement a bracket to the lingual side of each of your teeth, then they’ll fit the wire, slipping it into each bracket.

Once the brackets and archwires are in place, your orthodontist will be able to begin the process of gradually tightening the wires to gently nudge your teeth into the desired position.
