November is sleep month on the Specialist Orthodontic Group blog. So far we’ve covered why getting a quality night’s sleep is so important and how to tell if you’re sleep deprived. This week we’re zoning in on one of the key reasons you might not be getting enough sleep: snoring.
Many people aren’t aware of this: but all snores are not created equal. In fact, there are a wide number of different reasons why you might snore.
Intrigued? Here are three of the most common types of snorer.
The Sleep Apnea Sufferer
If you’re snoring is accompanied by a very poor night’s rest, it could be that you’re actually suffering from sleep apnea. This is a common condition where your breathing stops and starts while you’re asleep. In these cases, it’s very difficult to get into a proper deep sleep as each episode of sleep apnea will wake you momentarily.
The Nasal Snorer
Almost everyone will experience an occasional bout of nasal snoring. This is caused by an obstruction in the nasal passageways, generally due to a cold, allergies or a sinus infection. This type of snoring can also be permanent in the case of a deviated septum or a flaw in the nasal cavity.
The Throat and Tongue Snorer
Poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue is a common cause of snoring. This could be due to outside influences such as sleeping medication or alcohol, or it could just be due to experiencing particularly deep sleep. Age and body mass can also contribute, as can enlarged tonsils and adenoids.
No matter what type of snorer you are, there’s one thing you likely have in common. Many people who snore, along with their partners(!), are keen to find a way to stop!
